Nehemiah 9:5
Then the Leuites, Ieshua and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodiiah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, sayde, Stand vp, and blesse the Lord your God for euer and euer, and blessed bee thy glorious Name, which is exalted aboue all blessing and praise. Nehemiah 9:5 (KJV)
The book of Nehemiah records the period after the Babylonian exile when the Israelites were permitted to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the city and the temple. Nehemiah, serving as governor of Judah, played a crucial role in those restoration efforts. Earlier, in Nehemiah 8, the public reading of the Law of Moses had a profound impact on the people, leading them to recognize their disobedience and to weep over their transgressions.
In Nehemiah 9 the community gathered for a corporate prayer of confession and repentance. They fasted, wore sackcloth, and dusted themselves as signs of humility and sorrow. The Levites, the religious leaders of the community, stood up to lead this prayer on behalf of the people, demonstrating reverence and honor for the Lord.
The verse itself records that the Levites Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah stood and said, “Stand up and bless the LORD your God forever and ever; and blessed be thy glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.” Their standing and loud cry expressed both a heartfelt confession of sin and an exuberant exultation of God’s greatness.
This passage underscores the importance of acknowledging and exalting God in prayer and worship. It encourages believers to approach God with humility, recognizing His infinite worth, and to offer sincere, everlasting praise. As we reflect on the Levites’ example, we are reminded of the need to honor God’s glorious name in our own lives, trusting that such reverence draws us nearer to His mercy and forgiveness.
