Nehemiah 9:20

Listen to this article

“Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst.”

Context:Nehemiah 9 is a chapter that recounts the history of the Israelites, focusing on their time in the wilderness after their deliverance from Egypt. The people had gathered together to confess their sins and worship God. In this verse, the Israelites acknowledge God’s provision of His good spirit, manna, and water during their time in the wilderness.

God’s Good Spirit:The verse begins by recognizing that God gave His good Spirit to instruct the Israelites. The Holy Spirit was present among the people, guiding and teaching them. The Spirit’s presence was a significant source of divine guidance and revelation for the Israelites. It demonstrates God’s faithfulness in providing spiritual instruction and direction to His people.

Manna:The Israelites acknowledge that God did not withhold manna from their mouths. Manna was a supernatural provision of food that God provided for the Israelites during their wilderness journey. It was a miraculous substance that appeared daily, except on the Sabbath, to sustain them. The manna served as a tangible reminder of God’s faithfulness in providing for His people’s physical needs.

Water:The verse further acknowledges that God provided water for the Israelites’ thirst. Water is essential for survival, and in the wilderness, finding water sources could be challenging. Despite the harsh conditions, God ensured that His people had enough water to quench their thirst. This provision of water demonstrated God’s compassion and care for His people.

God’s Instruction:Just as God provided His good Spirit to instruct the Israelites, He continues to guide and teach us through His Word and the Holy Spirit today. We can rely on His guidance, seeking His wisdom and understanding in our lives.

God’s Provision:The provision of manna and water in the wilderness reminds us of God’s faithfulness and provision in our own lives. We can trust Him to meet our needs, both physical and spiritual, just as He did for the Israelites.

Gratitude and Worship:Nehemiah 9:20 reflects the Israelites’ grateful acknowledgment of God’s goodness. As we reflect on God’s provision and guidance in our lives, it should lead us to worship and express gratitude for His faithfulness.
