Context
The book of Nehemiah tells how the Jews returned from exile in Babylon and rebuilt Jerusalem’s walls. Nehemiah, a Jewish leader serving the Persian king, led this work. After the walls were finished, the city still had few residents. Nehemiah 11 records how people were chosen to live in Jerusalem so the city would be secure and its worship could continue.
This verse appears in a list of priests who settled in Jerusalem. It names Jedaiah, his father Joiarib, and Jachin. These men were part of the priestly families that served in the temple. Their presence was essential for the daily sacrifices and for teaching the people God’s law. The priests were chosen by lot or volunteered to live in the city, showing their willingness to serve.
Meaning
Jedaiah means “Yahweh has known” or “Yahweh knows.” This name points to a personal relationship with God. God knows each of His servants by name, and He knew Jedaiah’s faithful service. Jachin means “he establishes” or “he will establish.” This name may remind readers that God establishes His people and His worship. The two names together speak of a God who knows His own and who firmly sets them in place.
The verse gives no further details about these men. Yet their names are preserved in Scripture. This shows that God values every individual who serves Him, even when the Bible does not record their deeds. Their inclusion in this list confirms the continuity of the priestly line after the exile.
