“So stood the two companies of them that gave thanks in the house of God, and I, and the half of the rulers with me.”

Nehemiah 12:40 is part of the account of the dedication of the rebuilt walls of Jerusalem during the time of Nehemiah. This verse describes a specific moment during the dedication ceremony. To understand its significance, it’s helpful to provide some context.

Nehemiah was a cupbearer to the Persian king Artaxerxes I. After receiving news about the distressed state of Jerusalem and its broken walls, Nehemiah received permission from the king to return to his homeland and rebuild the city. Nehemiah, with the support of the Jewish people, accomplished this task in a remarkable 52 days.

In Nehemiah 12, we read about the joyous dedication of the newly rebuilt walls of Jerusalem. The chapter lists the various individuals and groups involved in the procession around the city walls. Verse 40 specifically mentions “the two companies of them that gave thanks in the house of God.”

These “two companies” were groups of individuals responsible for leading the people in songs of thanksgiving and praise. The phrase “gave thanks” implies that they were expressing gratitude to God for His faithfulness in enabling them to rebuild the walls and restore the city.

It’s worth noting that the two companies of thanksgiving were just one part of the larger procession. Nehemiah himself and “the half of the rulers with [him]” were present as well. This indicates that Nehemiah, as the leader of the project, actively participated in and supported the worship and celebration.

This verse highlights the importance of expressing gratitude and giving thanks to God for His provision and faithfulness. The act of dedicating the walls of Jerusalem was not merely a physical endeavour but also a spiritual one, acknowledging God’s role in their success.

As we study Nehemiah’s example, we can learn the significance of including thanksgiving and worship as an integral part of our achievements and milestones. Whether it’s in our personal lives or in the context of a community, expressing gratitude to God helps us recognise His hand in our endeavours and cultivates a spirit of humility and dependence on Him.

In summary, Nehemiah 12:40 captures a moment during the dedication of the rebuilt walls of Jerusalem when two companies of individuals led the people in songs of thanksgiving. This verse emphasises the importance of expressing gratitude to God for His faithfulness and provision in our lives.
