Nehemiah 12:45

Posted on 18 May at 13:55

And both the singers and the porters kept the ward of their God, and the ward of the purification, according to the commandement of Dauid, and of Solomon his sonne. Nehemiah 12:45 (KJV)

Nehemiah was a key figure in the restoration of Jerusalem and the rebuilding of its walls after the Babylonian exile. This verse belongs to the passage that describes the dedication of the rebuilt wall of Jerusalem and the joyful celebration that followed the completion of the work. It highlights the important role of the singers and the porters in keeping watch and maintaining order in the worship of God.

In the temple service the singers were responsible for leading worship and praise to God. They employed musical instruments and their voices to offer songs of thanksgiving and adoration, creating an atmosphere of gratitude. The porters, on the other hand, served as gatekeepers or doorkeepers of the temple. Their duty was to maintain security and order, ensuring that only authorized individuals entered the sacred space.

The verse states that both the singers and the porters kept the ward of their God and the ward of purification. This indicates that they were diligent in carrying out their responsibilities related to temple worship. By keeping the charge of the doors of the house of God, they preserved the sanctity of the worship space and upheld the regulations of purification that had been established.

David and Solomon, two prominent kings of Israel, instituted the order and structure of worship in the temple. They organized the Levites and assigned specific roles for service to God. Nehemiah emphasizes that the singers and porters faithfully followed the commandments and traditions set by these revered kings, demonstrating continuity with the worship practices established in earlier generations.

Readers are encouraged to read the surrounding verses and consult various translations and commentaries in order to gain a deeper understanding of this passage and its significance within the larger narrative of Jerusalem’s restoration.
