Nehemiah 13:26

Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did outlandish women cause to sin.

Nehemiah 13:26 (KJV)

Nehemiah spoke these words after the Jewish exiles returned from Babylon. He had led the rebuilding of Jerusalem’s walls, and then he worked to restore the people’s spiritual and moral condition. In this verse, he confronts the sin of marrying foreign women, using Solomon as a warning.

Nehemiah reminds the people that Solomon, the most honored king of Israel, sinned by these very things. Solomon was beloved of God, and God made him king over all Israel. Yet even he was led into idolatry by outlandish women, as recorded in 1 Kings 11:3-4. The point is clear: no privilege, wisdom, or divine favor makes a person safe from temptation. Even the greatest can fall.

Solomon’s downfall came through his foreign wives, who turned his heart after other gods. Nehemiah argues that if even the greatest king fell, the people of his day must not think they are immune. This connection shows that Nehemiah’s zeal for holiness was rooted in Scripture and history, not merely personal preference. His warning is grounded in what God had already revealed.

Nehemiah’s purpose was to teach the Israelites the importance of purity and faithfulness to God. The warning applies to every believer: the company we keep can lead us astray. We must guard our hearts and obey God fully, knowing that even the strongest can fall. Sin is serious, and we are not immune.

God’s love and calling do not make us immune to sin. Solomon received extraordinary blessings, yet he stumbled. This verse calls us to humility and vigilance, remembering that our safety lies in constant dependence on God and obedience to His Word. Let us learn from his example and stay close to the Lord.
