Nehemiah 13:29

Remember them, O my God, because they haue defiled the Priesthood, and the couenant of the Priesthood, and of the Leuites. Nehemiah 13:29 (KJV)

The book of Nehemiah recounts the story of the Jewish people returning from exile in Babylon to rebuild the city of Jerusalem and restore their religious practices. Nehemiah, a cupbearer to the Persian king, played a significant role in this process as the governor of Jerusalem.

In Nehemiah 13 we find the account of Nehemiah’s second term as governor after he had returned to Babylon for a time. When he returned to Jerusalem, he discovered that the people had neglected their commitment to God and His laws. Nehemiah took various actions to restore order and discipline among the people, including addressing the corruption and misconduct that had infiltrated the priesthood and the Levites. He also prayed for God’s remembrance and judgment on those who had defiled the priesthood and violated the covenant.

Defiling the Priesthood: The priesthood played a crucial role in the religious life of Israel. It was a sacred position entrusted with offering sacrifices, leading worship, and teaching God’s law. However, some individuals had corrupted their role and brought dishonor to the priesthood. Their actions may have included engaging in idolatry, neglecting their duties, or behaving in morally inappropriate ways.

The Covenant of the Priesthood: The covenant of the priesthood refers to the divine agreement established between God and the priests. This covenant outlined their responsibilities, privileges, and the conditions for serving in the priesthood. The priests were expected to maintain the sanctity of their office, live according to God’s commands, and faithfully represent Him to the people.

The Levites: The Levites were the tribe of Israel set apart to assist the priests in their duties. They were responsible for various tasks related to the tabernacle or temple service, including guarding the sacred space, singing praises, and assisting in the sacrificial system. Nehemiah’s concern extended not only to the priests but also to the Levites, as their roles were interconnected.

Appeal to God’s Remembrance: Nehemiah, as a faithful servant of God, appealed to Him to remember these transgressions committed against the priesthood and the covenant. By asking God to remember, Nehemiah sought divine intervention, justice, and discipline to be brought upon those who had defiled the priesthood and disregarded their sacred duties.

The sanctity of our roles: Whether we hold positions of leadership or serve in supportive roles, we must remember the sacredness of our service to God and strive to honour Him in all that we do.

Faithfulness to God’s commands: Just as the priests and Levites were expected to follow God’s commands, we should also be diligent in obeying His Word and living in accordance with His principles.

Accountability and discipline: Nehemiah’s response to the defilement within the priesthood teaches us the importance of holding one another accountable and addressing misconduct within our communities. When necessary, appropriate discipline should be applied to maintain purity and integrity.

Seeking God’s intervention: Like Nehemiah, we can turn to God in prayer, asking Him to remember injustices and acts that defile His name. We can trust in His justice and seek His guidance in addressing such situations.
