Job 5:20

Listen to this article

“In famine he shall redeem thee from death: and in war from the power of the sword.”

This verse is part of a response given by Eliphaz the Temanite, one of Job’s friends, in the midst of Job’s intense suffering and lamentations. Eliphaz offers his perspective on how God deals with those who are righteous and upright.

The verse begins by addressing a scenario of famine. Famine is a time of severe scarcity of food, which often leads to starvation and death. Eliphaz assures Job that God will deliver him from the threat of death even in the direst circumstances. It conveys the idea that God’s provision and deliverance extend beyond what might seem possible in times of scarcity.

The verse then transitions to the theme of war, where it states that God will deliver the righteous from the power of the sword. This suggests that even in times of conflict, when individuals are threatened by physical violence and warfare, God has the ability to protect and rescue those who trust in Him. The power of the sword symbolises the forces and weapons of war, and God’s intervention is portrayed as a means of salvation.

Overall, Job 5:20 highlights God’s ability to provide redemption and deliverance in various challenging circumstances. It emphasises the divine protection and intervention available to the righteous, assuring them of God’s faithfulness even in times of famine and war.

It’s important to note that while Eliphaz’s words offer some general truths about God’s character, the book of Job as a whole raises questions about the simplistic application of such principles to Job’s specific situation. The book of Job explores the complexities of suffering, the mysteries of God’s ways, and the limits of human understanding. Thus, it is crucial to consider the entire context and message of the book when interpreting individual verses like Job 5:20.
