Or deliuer me from the enemies hand, or redeeme me from the hand of the mighty? Job 6:23 (KJV)

While the Book of Job contains many expressions of suffering and pleas for divine help, the exact wording “Or, Deliver me from the enemy’s hand? or, Redeem me from the hand of the mighty?” does not appear in the biblical text.

Context: The book of Job is a profound exploration of human suffering and the search for meaning in the midst of trials. Job, described as a righteous man, undergoes severe afflictions, losing his wealth, his children, and suffering from painful sores. Job’s laments focus on his loss of wealth, the death of his children, and painful sores, and he repeatedly questions why he endures such hardship.

The Cry for Deliverance: Job’s question reflects his desperation and desire for relief from his suffering. It is a cry for help and a plea for God’s intervention. When faced with difficulties, it is natural to seek deliverance and freedom from our troubles.

The Enemy’s Hand: Job refers to the “enemy’s hand,” signifying the adversities and afflictions he is experiencing. Although his sufferings are not caused by human enemies, he perceives them as formidable foes. This highlights the intensity of his trials and his longing for release from their grip.

Redemption from the Mighty: Job also expresses his yearning for redemption from the hand of the mighty. This can be understood as an appeal for rescue from the overwhelming power and force that is oppressing him. He desires God to intervene and save him from his seemingly insurmountable situation.

A Reflection of Human Experience: Job’s cry for deliverance resonates with our own experiences of pain and hardship. At times, we may feel surrounded by adversity, with no apparent solution in sight. This passage reminds us that it is natural to turn to God in times of trouble and seek His deliverance.

Trusting in God’s Power: Job’s question implies a deep trust in God’s ability to save and redeem. Despite his distress, he recognizes that God has the power to rescue him from his enemies and the mighty. This demonstrates Job’s faith in God’s sovereignty and his belief that God is capable of bringing about deliverance.
