Job 8:8

Posted on 18 May at 13:54

For enquire, I pray thee, of the former age, and prepare thy selfe to the search of their fathers. Job 8:8 (KJV)

Job 8:8 states, “For inquire, I pray thee, of the former age, and search diligently into the things of their fathers.” This verse is part of Bildad the Shuhite’s response to Job’s lamentations concerning God’s justice in his suffering. Bildad, together with Eliphaz and Zophar, were among Job’s friends who came to offer comfort and counsel during his distress.

In this counsel Bildad urges Job to seek wisdom from previous generations. He encourages Job to inquire about the experiences of the “former age” and to prepare himself for the “searching of the generations,” that is, to study the teachings and lives of ancestors. By doing so, Job may gain insight and guidance that can illuminate his present trials. The passage underscores the value of learning from the past and the interconnectedness of generations, suggesting that historical wisdom can guide present challenges.

The importance of seeking wisdom from those who have gone before is a central theme. The “former age” refers to earlier generations, and the “searching of the generations” points to elders and forefathers who possessed accumulated knowledge. Bildad’s advice highlights that tapping into this accumulated wisdom can provide valuable direction for those facing suffering.

Application of this principle today is clear.

Job 8:8 reminds believers to appreciate the lessons of history and to actively pursue knowledge from the experiences and teachings of predecessors. Recognizing that we are part of a larger tapestry of human experience, we can expand our understanding, gain discernment, and navigate life’s challenges with greater wisdom. By taking the time to learn from the past, we honor the interconnectedness of generations and allow the insights of those who have gone before us to shape our present and future decisions.
