Job 13:4

But ye are forgers of lies, ye are all physicians of no value.

Job 13:4 (KJV)

The book of Job deals with human suffering. Job, a righteous man, loses his children, possessions, and health. His friends Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar come to comfort him, but they insist his suffering must be punishment for hidden sin. In this verse, Job answers them with sharp disappointment.

Job calls his friends “forgers of lies.” They invent explanations that do not match his life or God’s character. Their words are fabricated, not grounded in truth. He also calls them “physicians of no value.” A useless doctor cannot heal; their counsel brings no relief. They speak with confidence, but their comfort is empty. The phrase “forgers of lies” suggests deliberate fabrication, while “physicians of no value” points to counsel that fails to heal or help. Job’s friends, though well-intentioned, misrepresented God and offered simplistic answers to complex suffering.

Scripture often warns against false words that lead people away from God. Jeremiah 7:4 and Lamentations 2:14 describe prophets who give false assurance. Paul warns of deceitful teachers in 2 Corinthians 11:13. Job’s friends are not evil, but they misrepresent God. Their sincere but wrong advice becomes a lie because it does not reflect His true purposes. False words give false assurance and turn people from genuine trust in God.

This verse calls us to humility when we counsel others. We must test our words against Scripture and avoid simplistic answers to complex pain. When we speak to the suffering, we should listen first and speak truth with care. We must also be discerning about the advice we receive, measuring it by God’s Word rather than by human wisdom. Human wisdom, apart from divine revelation, is insufficient to address the deepest needs of the soul. This verse also warns against those who claim to speak for God but distort His truth.

God sees through falsehood and will vindicate the truth. Job’s honest cry reminds us that true comfort comes from God, who knows our pain and speaks truth that heals.
