Job 17:3

Posted on 18 May at 15:19
Listen to this article

“Lay down now, put me in a surety with thee; who is he that will strike hands with me?”

Context:The book of Job is a profound exploration of human suffering and the question of why bad things happen to good people. Job, a righteous man, experienced immense suffering and loss, and in this verse, he expresses his desire for someone to stand as a surety or guarantor on his behalf.

Job’s Desperation:Job was in a state of deep despair and felt abandoned by God and his friends. In this verse, he appeals for someone to step forward and vouch for his integrity. He longs for someone to be a mediator, to intercede on his behalf and secure his release from suffering.

Cry for Support:Job’s words reflect his need for human companionship and support during his distress. He seeks someone who would be willing to strike hands with him, which signifies making a covenant or entering into a binding agreement. By making such an agreement, Job hopes for a reassurance that he is not alone in his suffering.

A Call for Justice:Job’s appeal for someone to be his surety also suggests his longing for justice. He desires an advocate who can help him plead his case before God and find a resolution to his suffering. He believes that if someone is willing to stand with him, justice will prevail, and his circumstances will improve.

Reflection on Our Own Need:While the context of Job’s suffering is unique, this verse can prompt us to reflect on our own need for support and intercession during difficult times. It reminds us of the importance of community, compassion, and being there for one another as we face life’s challenges.

Ultimate Fulfillment in Christ:As Christians, we can see a foreshadowing of Jesus Christ in Job’s plea. Jesus, as the ultimate Surety and Mediator, intercedes on behalf of all believers before God. Through His sacrifice on the cross, He guarantees our salvation and offers us comfort and hope in times of trouble.
