Job 17:9

Posted on 18 May at 11:28

The righteous also shall hold on his way, and he that hath cleane hands shalbe stronger, and stronger. Job 17:9 (KJV)

The book of Job is a profound exploration of human suffering and the question of why righteous individuals sometimes endure intense trials and afflictions. Job, the central character, experienced immense loss, physical suffering, and emotional torment. In this verse, Job expresses his hope and confidence in the righteousness of the upright.

The term “righteous” refers to those who live in accordance with God’s commandments and exhibit integrity and moral uprightness. It signifies individuals who seek to honour and obey God in their thoughts, words, and actions. Throughout the book of Job, the main character, despite his suffering, asserts his innocence and righteousness.

The phrase “shall hold on his way” implies that the righteous person will remain steadfast and unwavering in their faith and conduct, even in the face of adversity. It suggests a commitment to follow God’s path, regardless of circumstances, and that the righteous person does not waver in their commitment to God despite trials and challenges.

The expression “he that hath clean hands” signifies moral purity and blamelessness. It represents a person who is free from guilt and wrongdoing, maintaining a life of integrity before God and others. Clean hands symbolize righteous actions and a pure heart that seeks to honour God in all things.

The latter part of the verse declares that the person with clean hands and righteousness will become “stronger and stronger.” This emphasizes the growth and increasing strength of the righteous individual, both spiritually and emotionally. As they continue to hold on to their faith, they will experience spiritual maturation, deepening their relationship with God and gaining strength to face life’s challenges.

Overall, Job 17:9 conveys that the righteous person, who maintains integrity and clings to God’s ways, will not only endure but also grow stronger in faith and character. It encourages believers to remain steadfast, even during times of suffering and difficulty, knowing that God rewards and sustains those who faithfully follow Him.
