Job 20:27

Posted on 18 May at 15:19
Listen to this article

“The heaven shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him.”

This verse is part of a speech given by Zophar, one of Job’s friends, as he responds to Job’s defence of his innocence. Zophar is asserting that the wicked will ultimately face the consequences of their actions.

Let’s break down the verse and explore its meaning:

“The heaven shall reveal his iniquity”: This statement suggests that the sins or wrongdoing of the wicked person will be exposed. It implies that even though their actions might be hidden from human eyes, they will eventually be brought to light. The “heaven” here can be understood as a symbolic representation of God, who sees and knows all things. In essence, it means that God, who is omniscient, will make known the sins of the wicked.

“And the earth shall rise up against him”: This phrase describes a form of judgment or opposition against the wicked person. It conveys the idea that the very earth on which they stand will turn against them. The concept of the earth rising up suggests that there will be an overwhelming force or a collective response against the wicked, resulting in their downfall or punishment.

In summary, Job 20:27 speaks to the ultimate exposure and consequences of the wicked person’s actions. It emphasises that God will reveal their iniquity, and there will be a form of judgment or opposition from the earth itself. This verse underscores the belief that God’s justice will prevail, and the wicked will face the consequences of their deeds.

It’s important to note that while the book of Job contains various speeches and dialogues between Job and his friends, the speeches of Job’s friends do not always accurately reflect God’s perspective or the ultimate truth. The book of Job is a complex exploration of human suffering, faith, and the sovereignty of God. So, it’s essential to consider the entirety of the book when interpreting specific verses.
