Job 26:7

Posted on 18 May at 15:19
Listen to this article

“He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.”

Context: The book of Job revolves around the story of a righteous man named Job who experiences severe affliction and suffering. Throughout the book, Job wrestles with the question of why he is suffering and seeks answers from God.

God’s Sovereignty: In this particular verse, Job is acknowledging the greatness and power of God. He speaks of God’s ability to stretch out the north over the empty place. This statement refers to God’s control and dominion over the earth and its vast expanses.

Symbolism: The phrase “stretcheth out the north over the empty place” is likely a poetic description of God’s creative power and authority. It portrays God as the one who establishes the boundaries and structure of the earth. The “north” represents the heavens, and the “empty place” refers to the vast expanse of space.

Earth’s Suspension: The latter part of the verse states that God “hangeth the earth upon nothing.” This statement is remarkable when considering the time the book of Job was written, long before scientific understanding of the earth’s position in the universe. Job acknowledges that the earth is not supported by any physical pillars or resting on any foundation but is sustained by God’s power alone.

Scientific Implications: Job’s statement anticipates the scientific understanding of the earth’s position in space. It highlights the accuracy and profoundness of the biblical text, demonstrating that God’s Word encompasses truth that transcends human knowledge at the time it was written.

God’s Unfathomable Wisdom: Job’s contemplation of God’s power and control over creation emphasizes the incomprehensibility of God’s wisdom. It reveals Job’s humility and awe before God, recognizing that human understanding is limited in comparison to the vastness of God’s wisdom and knowledge.
