Job 28:10

Posted on 18 May at 15:19
Listen to this article

“He cutteth out rivers among the rocks; and his eye seeth every precious thing.”

Context: The book of Job is known for its exploration of human suffering and the theological questions it raises. Job, a righteous man, faces immense trials and loss, and he engages in a dialogue with his friends who attempt to explain his suffering. In Job 28, the focus shifts to the topic of wisdom and the search for understanding.

Exegesis:

Rivers among the rocks: The metaphorical language used here depicts God’s creative power. Just as rivers carve their way through rocks, God has the ability to shape and direct the course of nature. This image highlights the magnificence of God’s work and His sovereignty over creation.

His eye seeth every precious thing: This phrase emphasizes God’s omniscience and His awareness of all things, particularly those of value. The precious things can refer to the valuable resources hidden deep within the earth, or it can symbolize the wisdom and knowledge that God possesses. God’s eye, His watchful gaze, is constantly observing and understanding every detail.

The verse as a whole underscores two important attributes of God: His power to shape creation and His infinite wisdom and knowledge. It reminds us that God’s understanding surpasses human comprehension and that He has complete control over nature and the world.

Application:

  • Reverence for God’s creation: The imagery of God cutting rivers through rocks highlights the awe-inspiring nature of the natural world. As we contemplate the beauty and complexity of creation, we should cultivate a sense of reverence and gratitude for God’s handiwork.
  • Seeking wisdom: The mention of God’s eye beholding every precious thing directs our attention to the wisdom that comes from God alone. In our pursuit of knowledge and understanding, we should acknowledge our limitations and depend on God’s wisdom. We can seek wisdom through prayer, studying His Word, and seeking guidance from the Holy Spirit.
  • Trusting in God’s sovereignty: The verse reminds us that God sees and understands all things. Even when we face difficulties and don’t understand the reasons behind them, we can trust in God’s sovereignty. Just as He shapes rivers among the rocks, He is working out His purposes in our lives, even when we cannot perceive them.
  • Appreciating the value of spiritual treasures: The reference to “precious things” can also be applied to the spiritual treasures found in God’s Word and relationship with Him. We should cherish the wisdom and knowledge found in Scripture and the eternal treasures of faith, love, and righteousness.

Conclusion:

Job 28:10 highlights God’s power over creation and His all-knowing nature. It calls us to acknowledge and revere God’s handiwork, seek His wisdom, trust in His sovereignty, and appreciate the value of spiritual treasures. By embracing these truths, we can grow in our understanding of God and deepen our relationship with Him.
