Job 28:15

“It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof.”

Job 28:15 (KJV) says: “It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof.”

This verse is part of a larger passage known as the “Hymn to Wisdom” found in Job 28. In this chapter, Job reflects on the nature of wisdom and its value. The context of this verse is important to understand its meaning fully.

In the preceding verses, Job talks about how people search for precious metals and gems by mining the earth. They are willing to go to great lengths, risking their lives and enduring difficult conditions, to obtain these treasures. Job acknowledges the skill and determination people employ in extracting valuable resources from the earth.

However, in verse 15, Job states that wisdom cannot be acquired by any amount of wealth. The wisdom he refers to here is not merely intellectual knowledge but rather the profound understanding of God’s ways and His purpose in allowing suffering and trials. This wisdom is what Job seeks in the midst of his suffering and loss.

Job emphasizes that no amount of gold or silver can buy wisdom. It is not something that can be acquired through material possessions or exchanged for wealth. Wisdom comes from a higher source, and it is priceless.

This verse teaches us that true wisdom is not a commodity that can be purchased or obtained through external means. It cannot be measured by material possessions or evaluated by earthly standards. Instead, wisdom is a gift from God, and it is something that must be sought after with a humble heart and a desire to understand God’s ways.

As Christians, we should recognise that worldly wealth and possessions, though valuable in their own right, cannot compare to the immeasurable worth of godly wisdom. We are encouraged to pursue wisdom by seeking a deeper understanding of God’s Word, through prayer, and by living in accordance with His principles.
