Job 34:21

Posted on 18 May at 11:27

For his eyes are vpon the wayes of man, and he seeth all his goings. Job 34:21 (KJV)

This verse is part of a speech given by Elihu, one of Job’s friends who sought to provide an explanation for Job’s suffering. Elihu’s speech can be found in Job 32‑37, and his words are seen as a precursor to God’s response to Job later in the book. In this particular verse Elihu emphasizes the omniscience of God, asserting that God’s eyes are constantly watching the ways of humans and that He sees all their actions and behaviours. The statement underscores the belief that God is all‑knowing and nothing escapes His attention.

The context of this verse is important for a deeper understanding. Throughout the book of Job, Job endures intense suffering, and his friends attempt to rationalise his afflictions. Their explanations, including Elihu’s, are flawed and misguided, and the text does not record a rebuke of Elihu by God. Nevertheless, a theological truth can be gleaned: God’s awareness is not limited to external actions but extends to the innermost thoughts and motivations of each person.

This knowledge should prompt believers to live in a way that is pleasing to God, acknowledging that both actions and intentions are always under His watchful gaze. Job 34:21 also serves as a reminder that God is just and fair in His dealings with humanity. If God truly sees all our goings and understands the motivations behind our actions, we can take comfort in the fact that He will judge and deal with each person according to His perfect wisdom and righteousness.

Overall, Job 34:21 underscores the belief in God’s omniscience and acts as a call to righteous living, knowing that our actions and intentions are always observed by Him.
