Job 36:9

Then hee sheweth them their worke, and their transgressions, that they haue exceeded. Job 36:9 (KJV)

The book of Job is a poetic and philosophical exploration of the problem of human suffering. Job, a righteous and blameless man, experiences immense loss—his family, his possessions, and his health—and engages in a series of dialogues with his friends as they all seek answers to profound questions about God’s justice and wisdom.

In Job 36:9 Elihu, the younger speaker who appears after the three friends, declares that God “shows them their work, and their transgressions that they have exceeded.” He emphasizes God’s incomprehensible greatness, saying, “For God is great, and we know not: the number of his years is unsearchable.” Elihu also affirms God’s unique knowledge: “For he hath said, ‘I am perfect in knowledge: there is none like unto me.’” This passage reflects God’s awareness of human actions and His role in guiding individuals toward righteousness.

God’s perfect knowledge implies that He is fully aware of all things—past, present, and future—and possesses wisdom that exceeds human reasoning. The broader context of Job underscores this, for Job 37:16 refers to “him which is perfect in knowledge,” and Isaiah 46:9 declares, “I am God, and there is none like me.” Such statements underscore the vast difference between divine wisdom and human limitation, echoing Isaiah 55:8‑9 that God’s thoughts and ways are higher than ours.

The implications for believers are clear. Recognizing the vastness and perfection of God’s knowledge should lead us to humility and reverence, acknowledging our limited understanding and the need to seek His counsel in all aspects of life. Trust in God’s sovereignty is reinforced, even when circumstances seem unclear or unjust, because His ways are beyond human comprehension.

Ultimately, Job’s story teaches that while human understanding is limited, God’s ways are higher and beyond our comprehension. The declaration in Job 36:9 invites us to trust in God’s sovereign wisdom, to approach Him with humility, and to rely on His perfect guidance in every circumstance.
