Job 37:7

Posted on 18 May at 15:19
Listen to this article

“He sealeth up the hand of every man; that all men may know his work.”

Context:The book of Job is a poetic and philosophical exploration of human suffering and the nature of God’s justice. Job, a righteous man, goes through immense trials and losses, prompting a series of dialogues between him and his friends who try to explain his suffering. In chapter 37, Job’s friend Elihu speaks, emphasizing the greatness and sovereignty of God.

God’s Sovereignty:In this verse, Elihu is describing one aspect of God’s power and control over creation. The phrase “He sealeth up the hand of every man” refers to God’s ability to bring human activity to a halt. It suggests that God can restrain or limit the actions of individuals, ensuring that all people recognise His work.

Divine Revelation:The purpose of God sealing up the hand of every man is so that “all men may know his work.” This speaks to God’s desire for humanity to acknowledge His sovereignty, power, and creative works. When God brings about circumstances that limit human control or influence, it can serve as a reminder for people to recognise and honour God’s hand in all things.

Humility and Recognition:This verse highlights the importance of humility and recognising God’s authority. It reminds us that we are not in complete control of our lives and that God is ultimately the one who governs all things. When we acknowledge His work and submit to His will, we align ourselves with His divine purposes.

Application:Job 37:7 encourages believers to cultivate a humble and reverent attitude towards God. It reminds us to recognise His hand in our lives and in the world around us. It calls us to trust in His sovereignty, even when circumstances seem beyond our control. Additionally, it challenges us to reflect on our own actions and motives, considering whether they align with God’s will.

  • Overall, Job 37:7 emphasises God’s supreme authority over human activities and calls us to acknowledge His work and submit to His will. It encourages humility, recognition of God’s sovereignty, and a deeper trust in His plans and purposes.
