Job 38:19

Listen to this article

“Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof?”

Job 38:19 (KJV) says: “Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof?”

This verse is part of a larger portion of the book of Job where God is speaking to Job out of the whirlwind. Throughout the book, Job has been questioning God’s justice and seeking answers for his suffering. In chapters 38 to 42, God finally responds to Job’s questioning, and in this particular verse, God addresses the concept of light and darkness.

The Question of Light:God begins by asking Job, “Where is the way where light dwelleth?” This question is not meant to imply that light has a physical dwelling place, but rather it emphasises the grandeur and mystery of light. It suggests that light comes from a divine source and operates according to God’s design. It also reminds Job of his limited understanding of the workings of the universe, including the nature of light.

The Question of Darkness:God follows up the question about light by asking, “and as for darkness, where is the place thereof?” This question is intended to highlight the same point as the previous one but in relation to darkness. Just as Job cannot comprehend the origin and dwelling place of light, he is also incapable of fully understanding darkness. God is emphasising His sovereignty over both light and darkness, asserting His authority over the natural world.

Overall, this verse serves as a reminder to Job (and to readers) of the limitations of human understanding. It emphasises the majesty and sovereignty of God over the natural world, including the complex and mysterious phenomena of light and darkness. Job is being reminded that he, as a finite human being, cannot fully comprehend the ways of an infinite and omnipotent God. This humbling realisation encourages Job to submit to God’s wisdom and trust in His sovereignty, even in the face of suffering and unanswered questions.

In a broader context, this verse also invites us to contemplate the nature of light and darkness and their symbolic significance. Light often represents knowledge, understanding, and the presence of God, while darkness can symbolise ignorance, confusion, and the absence of God. Reflecting on these themes can deepen our understanding of the spiritual journey and our relationship with God.

It is important to note that the book of Job raises profound theological questions about suffering, justice, and the nature of God. While this verse focuses on the theme of light and darkness, the overall context of the book provides a rich exploration of these deeper theological matters.
