Job 38:20

Posted on 18 May at 14:12

“That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?”

Context:The book of Job is known for its exploration of the problem of human suffering and the mystery of God’s ways. In this particular verse, God responds to Job out of a whirlwind, challenging him with a series of questions to highlight His wisdom, power, and sovereignty.

Symbolism of “it” and “the bound thereof”:The “it” in this verse refers to light, which God is addressing. Light is often used symbolically throughout the Bible to represent knowledge, truth, righteousness, and God’s presence. The “bound thereof” refers to the physical boundaries or limits of light, its paths, and its dwelling places.

God’s question and its significance:“that thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?” emphasizes the limits of human understanding. It highlights the fact that God possesses full knowledge of the boundaries and paths of light, whereas humans are limited in their understanding of the natural world and its mysteries.

Humility before God:The entire passage of Job 38 contains a series of questions from God, demonstrating His wisdom, power, and authority over creation. Job, who had questioned God’s justice and providence, is reminded of his limited understanding compared to God’s infinite wisdom. This verse underscores the importance of humility and acknowledging our limitations before the Almighty.
