Job 38:32

Posted on 18 May at 15:18
Listen to this article

“Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?”

Context of Job: The book of Job is a profound exploration of human suffering and the nature of God’s sovereignty. Job, a righteous man, faced immense trials and was engaged in a dialogue with his friends who attempted to explain his suffering. Ultimately, God intervenes and responds to Job’s questions and complaints, reminding him of His wisdom, power, and control over all creation.

God’s Challenge to Job: In Job 38, God answers Job out of a whirlwind and poses a series of questions to Job to demonstrate His supreme authority and understanding. Job had questioned God’s justice, but God now shows Job the limitations of his human understanding.

The Meaning of Job 38:32:

– Mazzaroth: The term “Mazzaroth” refers to a constellation or a group of stars. The exact identification of Mazzaroth is uncertain, as it is a term found only in this verse. Some scholars believe it refers to the entire zodiac or the constellations in the night sky. Others suggest it may be a specific constellation like Orion or the Pleiades. Regardless of the precise meaning, it emphasises God’s control over the heavenly bodies.

– Arcturus: Arcturus is a bright star in the constellation Bootes. It is one of the brightest stars visible from Earth. The mention of “his sons” may refer to other stars or constellations in the same vicinity.

The Implication: God’s question to Job in verse 32 highlights the limitations of human knowledge and power. By mentioning Mazzaroth and Arcturus, God is emphasising His ability to bring forth and control the celestial bodies. He is asking Job if he possesses the power and understanding to command and govern the stars and constellations. The implied answer is that only God has the ability to do so.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • Humility: The question God poses to Job underscores the need for humility before God. Job is reminded of his limited understanding compared to the wisdom and power of the Creator. It is a humbling reminder that we, as humans, are not in control of the vastness of the universe.
  • Trust in God’s Sovereignty: Job’s suffering led him to question God’s justice and control. This verse reminds us that God’s understanding and power extend far beyond our comprehension. We are called to trust in His sovereignty, even when we face trials and difficulties that we cannot fully understand.
  • God’s Magnificent Creation: The mention of the celestial bodies reminds us of the incredible beauty and complexity of God’s creation. It encourages us to contemplate the wonders of the universe and recognise the handiwork of God in all things.
