Job 39:5

Posted on 18 May at 15:18
Listen to this article

“Who hath sent out the wild ass free? or who hath loosed the bands of the wild ass?”

Job 39:5 is part of a larger portion in the book of Job where God answers Job out of the whirlwind, questioning him to demonstrate His wisdom and power. In this particular verse, God directs Job’s attention to the wild ass or the wild donkey. This animal symbolizes freedom and untamed nature.

The verse raises two rhetorical questions. First, “Who hath sent out the wild ass free?” Here, God highlights that it is He who has released the wild ass into the world. The implication is that God is the one who has ordained its freedom and wild nature. The wild donkey represents the untamed aspects of God’s creation, emphasizing the sovereignty and control of God over His creation.

The second question, “Who hath loosed the bands of the wild ass?” points to the fact that the wild ass is not domesticated or subject to human control. It highlights the untamable and independent nature of this creature. The bands or restraints mentioned in this verse refer to any attempt to harness or control the wild ass. God emphasizes that no human being can claim responsibility for releasing or restraining this creature.

This verse serves to remind Job of God’s wisdom, authority, and power. It underscores the fact that God’s ways and works are beyond human comprehension. In the subsequent verses of Job 39, God continues to question Job about various aspects of His creation, emphasizing His sovereignty and the intricate design of the natural world.

Overall, Job 39:5 encourages humility and recognition of God’s supremacy. It highlights the contrast between God’s infinite wisdom and power and the limited understanding of human beings. By showcasing the wild ass as a symbol of untamed creation, the verse reminds us of the vastness of God’s creation and our place within it.
