Psalms 10:15

Posted on 18 May at 15:18
Listen to this article

“Break thou the arm of the wicked and the evil man: seek out his wickedness till thou find none.”

Context: Psalm 10 is a lament of the psalmist concerning the oppression and wickedness of the enemies of God’s people. It begins by describing the arrogance and wickedness of the wicked, who seem to prosper while disregarding God and oppressing the poor and needy. The psalmist cries out to God for deliverance and justice. In verse 15, the psalmist petitions God to break the arm of the wicked and to fully expose their wickedness until it is eradicated.

Meaning and Interpretation: a) “Break thou the arm of the wicked and the evil man”: The arm symbolizes strength and power. In this verse, the psalmist is asking God to break the arm of the wicked and the evil man, which signifies a prayer for God to render the wicked powerless. It is a plea for God’s intervention to weaken the oppressors and to bring an end to their evil deeds.

b) “Seek out his wickedness till thou find none”: The psalmist implores God to thoroughly investigate the wickedness of the evil man until none remains. This verse expresses the psalmist’s desire for God to uncover the depths of their wickedness and ultimately eliminate it completely. It reflects a plea for divine justice and the eradication of evil from the earth.

Application:

  • Recognizing the reality of evil: This verse acknowledges the existence of wickedness and evil in the world. As believers, it is essential to be aware of the presence of evil and to understand that it often opposes the purposes and character of God.
  • Seeking justice and deliverance: The psalmist’s prayer teaches us to turn to God in times of oppression or when facing injustice. Just as the psalmist cries out for God’s intervention, we can bring our concerns, struggles, and petitions to the Lord, trusting in His justice and deliverance.
  • Trusting in God’s power and sovereignty: The psalmist’s plea reflects a trust in God’s ability to overcome and conquer evil. It reminds us that God is ultimately in control and has the power to dismantle the plans of the wicked. As we face challenges or encounter evil in our lives, we can place our trust in God’s sovereignty, knowing that He will ultimately triumph over all evil.
  • A call for personal examination: This verse also invites us to examine our own hearts and actions. It reminds us to be mindful of any wickedness within ourselves and to seek God’s forgiveness and transformation. We should strive to live in alignment with God’s principles and to be agents of justice, righteousness, and love in the world.

In summary, Psalm 10:15 is a heartfelt plea to God for justice, deliverance, and the eradication of wickedness. It encourages us to trust in God’s power, seek His intervention, and examine our own lives in light of His righteousness.
