Psalms 36:2

Listen to this article

“For he flattereth himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity be found to be hateful.”

In this verse, the psalmist describes the behaviour of a wicked person who deceives themselves and indulges in sinful actions.

Self-deception and Flattery:The verse begins by highlighting the deceptive nature of the wicked person. It says, “For he flattereth himself in his own eyes.” This suggests that the individual takes pleasure in self-praise and exalts themselves without recognising their own faults and sins. It reveals an attitude of self-deception and arrogance.

Unveiling Iniquity:The verse continues, stating, “until his iniquity be found to be hateful.” Despite the wicked person’s self-flattery, their sinful actions will eventually be exposed and discovered for what they truly are. The word “hateful” indicates that these iniquities are detestable in the sight of God and others.

This verse serves as a warning against self-deception and pride, emphasising the importance of self-reflection, humility, and recognition of our own faults. It reminds us that our actions, even if hidden for a time, will ultimately be revealed and judged.

Additionally, this verse encourages us to seek righteousness and avoid the path of the wicked. It reminds us that God despises iniquity and calls us to align our lives with His principles of justice, truth, and righteousness.

Overall, this verse prompts us to reflect on our own attitudes and actions, ensuring that we are not deceived by our own self-praise or blinded to our faults. It reminds us to humble ourselves before God, acknowledging our need for His forgiveness and guidance.
