Listen to this article

“Depart from evil, and do good; and dwell for evermore.”

Context:Psalm 37 is attributed to King David and is categorised as a wisdom psalm. It offers guidance on living a righteous life and finding peace in God’s faithfulness amidst the presence of wickedness in the world.

Depart from evil:The verse begins with an admonition to depart from evil. It encourages believers to turn away from anything that is contrary to God’s will and character. Departing from evil involves actively avoiding sinful actions, thoughts, and influences. It requires making deliberate choices to live according to God’s commandments and principles.

Do good:The second part of the verse urges individuals to do good. It emphasises the importance of positive actions and righteous behaviour. Doing good involves living in accordance with God’s standards, seeking justice, showing kindness and compassion to others, and walking in obedience to His Word. It is an active response to departing from evil.

Dwell for evermore:The verse concludes by highlighting the promise of an eternal dwelling place for those who follow the instruction to depart from evil and do good. It points to the ultimate reward and security found in a lasting relationship with God. Dwelling forevermore suggests the eternal presence and favour of God for those who faithfully live according to His ways.

Key Lessons:

  • Rejecting evil:The verse emphasises the importance of actively turning away from evil. It encourages believers to resist temptation and to distance themselves from sinful practices, attitudes, and associations.
  • Pursuing righteousness:Alongside departing from evil, the psalmist emphasises the necessity of actively engaging in good works. This includes acts of kindness, generosity, justice, and obedience to God’s commands.
  • Eternal reward:The verse assures believers that their commitment to departing from evil and doing good will lead to an everlasting dwelling in the presence of God. It reminds believers of the eternal perspective and the ultimate reward awaiting those who faithfully follow God’s ways.

Application:

  • Psalm 37:27 serves as a reminder and exhortation for believers to live lives characterised by righteousness and goodness. It calls for intentional choices in departing from evil and actively engaging in acts of kindness and obedience to God’s commands. By doing so, believers can experience the assurance of God’s presence and the promise of an eternal dwelling with Him.
