Psalms 58:4

Posted on 18 May at 15:16
Listen to this article

“Their poison is like the poison of a serpent: they are like the deaf adder that stoppeth her ear;”

Context: Psalm 58 is attributed to David and is categorised as a psalm of imprecation or judgment. It addresses the wickedness of unjust rulers and calls upon God to bring justice and judgement upon them.

Symbolism of poison: In this verse, David uses the metaphor of poison to describe the wickedness and corruption of those in power. Poison is often associated with harm, death, and deceit. It signifies the destructive nature of the actions and words of the wicked.

Serpent and adder symbolism: David compares the wicked to serpents, specifically mentioning a deaf adder. Serpents are often associated with deception, cunning, and danger. The deaf adder is symbolic of the wicked who refuse to listen to the voice of reason, correction, or righteousness. They willfully ignore the truth and resist any efforts to guide them on the right path.

Spiritual application: This verse highlights the nature of the wicked and the consequences of their actions. It serves as a reminder to God’s people to be discerning and aware of those who exhibit poisonous behaviour, deceiving others and rejecting wise counsel. As believers, we should strive to walk in righteousness, resisting the allure of wickedness and being careful not to adopt the ways of the wicked.

Seeking justice: Throughout the psalm, David implores God to bring judgement upon the wicked and to establish justice. This verse echoes the desire for God’s intervention and the expectation that He will ultimately bring righteousness and justice to the world.

Lessons for believers: Psalm 58:4 reminds believers of the importance of discernment and the need to be cautious of those who exhibit wickedness and deceit. It encourages us to seek righteousness and to pray for justice, trusting in God’s ultimate authority to bring about justice and judgement in due time.
