“The Lord hath said, I will bring again from Bashan, I will bring my people again from the depths of the sea.”

Context of Psalm 68:Psalm 68 is attributed to King David and is categorized as a psalm of praise and victory. It celebrates the power and deliverance of God on behalf of His people. The psalm acknowledges God’s might in defeating His enemies and His care for the weak and needy.

Understanding Psalm 68:22:In verse 22, the psalmist speaks on behalf of God, proclaiming His intention to rescue His people. The reference to “Bashan” and the “depths of the sea” symbolizes the places from which God will gather His people. Let’s explore the symbolism further.

  • Bashan:Bashan was a region located northeast of the Sea of Galilee known for its rich pastures and abundance of cattle. It represented a place of prosperity and security. In this verse, the mention of Bashan signifies God’s ability to bring His people back from a land of abundance and safety. It highlights His power to restore and gather His scattered ones.
  • Depths of the sea:The depths of the sea refer to a place of danger and captivity. It symbolizes the difficult circumstances in which God’s people might find themselves. Despite their challenging situation, God promises to rescue them and bring them back to safety. This imagery portrays God’s deliverance from seemingly impossible situations.

Spiritual lessons and applications:Psalm 68:22 conveys several spiritual lessons and applications that we can derive from the verse:

  • God’s ability to rescue:The verse reminds us that God is capable of rescuing His people from various circumstances, whether they are trapped in physical or spiritual bondage. It demonstrates His power to deliver us from places of abundance or despair.
  • God’s faithfulness:The psalmist’s proclamation of God’s intention to bring His people back indicates His faithfulness to His promises. Just as God delivered the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, He remains faithful to rescue and restore His people today.
  • Trusting in God’s deliverance:This verse encourages us to trust in God’s deliverance, even when situations seem impossible or overwhelming. We can have confidence that God will come through and bring us to a place of safety and security.
  • God’s restoration:The imagery of bringing His people back implies a restoration of what was lost. God not only rescues but also restores what was broken or taken away. This speaks to His heart of love and care for His people.

Relating to Christ:As Christians, we can also view Psalm 68:22 through the lens of Jesus Christ. Jesus fulfilled numerous prophecies and promises of the Old Testament, and His life, death, and resurrection demonstrate God’s ultimate deliverance and restoration.

  • Bashan represents the abundance and security found in Christ. Through Him, we experience true prosperity and eternal security.
  • The depths of the sea symbolize the bondage of sin and the captivity in which humanity found itself. Jesus came to rescue us from the depths of our spiritual captivity, providing redemption and freedom through His sacrifice on the cross.
  • Through His death and resurrection, Jesus brings us back to God, reconciling us to Him and restoring our relationship with the Father. Therefore, Psalm 68:22 can be seen as a foreshadowing of God’s ultimate plan of redemption through Jesus Christ.

In conclusion, Psalm 68:22 celebrates God’s power to rescue His people from challenging situations, emphasizing His faithfulness, restoration, and ability to bring us back to safety. As Christians, we can also recognize the fulfilment of these promises through Jesus Christ, who rescues us from sin and restores our relationship with God.
