“O God, thou art terrible out of thy holy places: the God of Israel is he that giveth strength and power unto his people. Blessed be God.”

Context and Background:Psalm 68 is a psalm attributed to King David and is known as a song of triumph or victory. It celebrates God’s power, deliverance, and His care for His people. It is a poetic expression of praise and thanksgiving.

The Terrible God:The word terrible used in this verse can be understood in the sense of awe-inspiring, majestic, and powerful. It acknowledges that God is awesome and fearsome in His holiness and righteousness. The psalmist acknowledges that God’s power emanates from His holy places, referring to His dwelling place or heavenly abode.

The God of Israel:The psalmist declares that the God of Israel is the one who gives strength and power to His people. This statement emphasizes that God is the source of strength and empowerment for the nation of Israel. It highlights the special relationship between God and His chosen people.

Strength and Power:The verse reminds us that God is not only a mighty and awe-inspiring God but also the one who imparts strength and power to His people. It is through God’s provision of strength and power that His people can overcome challenges, obstacles, and enemies. This assurance of divine assistance is a cause for praise and gratitude.

Blessed be God:The psalm concludes with a blessing to God. This is an expression of worship and thanksgiving for His mighty acts and His faithfulness towards His people. It acknowledges that God deserves all honour, glory, and praise for His goodness and provision.

Application:Psalm 68:35 encourages us to recognise and honour God for His power, strength, and provision in our lives. It reminds us that God is not only majestic and awesome but also actively involved in empowering His people. As believers, we can find comfort and assurance in knowing that God is with us and equips us for every situation. We should respond with praise and gratitude, offering our worship to God for His faithfulness and blessings.

In summary, Psalm 68:35 calls us to acknowledge God’s awe-inspiring power and recognise Him as the source of strength and power for His people. It prompts us to offer praise and bless God for His faithfulness and provision.
