Psalms 71:10

Listen to this article

“Mine enemies speak against me; and they that lay wait for my soul take counsel together.”

Context of Psalm 71:Psalm 71 is attributed to King David, and it is categorised as a psalm of trust in God’s protection and deliverance. Throughout this psalm, David expresses his confidence in God’s faithfulness, particularly in the face of his enemies and adversaries. In verse 10, David acknowledges that his enemies not only speak against him but also conspire together to harm him.

Enemies speaking against the psalmist:David acknowledges that he is the subject of verbal attacks by his enemies. They likely spread false rumours, made slanderous remarks, or engaged in malicious gossip to undermine his reputation and cause harm. These words can be deeply hurtful and emotionally distressing. David’s situation highlights the reality that even those who follow God faithfully can face opposition and face the negativity of others.

Enemies plotting against the psalmist’s life:Beyond speaking against David, his enemies also take counsel together with the intention of laying wait for his soul. This suggests that they are actively plotting against his life, seeking to bring harm or even death upon him. David is aware of their plans and the danger he faces from their schemes.

The psalmist’s response and reliance on God:In the midst of this challenging situation, David turns to God for help and protection. This psalm is a prayer of trust, with David repeatedly expressing his dependence on God’s righteousness, faithfulness, and salvation. Despite the threats he faces, David places his hope in God’s power to deliver him and defeat his enemies. The psalmist’s trust in God’s protection serves as an example for believers to seek refuge in God during times of adversity and opposition.

Application for believers:Psalm 71:10 reminds us that as believers, we may encounter opposition and face enemies who speak against us or conspire to harm us. It is essential to remember that we are not alone in our struggles. Just as David turned to God in his distress, we should seek God’s presence, guidance, and protection in times of adversity. We can find comfort in knowing that God is aware of our circumstances and is faithful to provide strength and deliverance. Moreover, this verse encourages us to be cautious and discerning about the intentions of those around us, recognising that not everyone may have our best interests at heart.
