Psalms 77:5

Posted on 18 May at 15:15

“I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times.”

Psalm 77:5 (KJV) says: “I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times.”

Context: Psalm 77 is attributed to Asaph, one of the chief musicians during the time of King David. This psalm is categorised as a psalm of lament, expressing deep distress and seeking solace and deliverance from God. In the preceding verses, the psalmist is overwhelmed by trouble and his soul refuses to be comforted (Psalm 77:2). The psalmist cries out to God and reflects on past experiences of God’s faithfulness.

Reflecting on the days of old: In Psalm 77:5, the psalmist declares his intention to ponder and consider the days of old and the years of ancient times. This statement reveals the psalmist’s desire to find solace and encouragement by recalling God’s mighty acts in history. By reflecting on the past, the psalmist seeks to gain perspective and find hope in the present circumstances.

The significance of remembering: Throughout the Bible, remembering is often emphasised as a means of strengthening faith and finding comfort in God’s faithfulness. By remembering God’s works and deeds in the past, we are reminded of His power, His promises, and His deliverance. This remembrance can bolster our trust in Him and provide assurance that He is able to act in our current situations.

God’s faithfulness in the past: The psalmist’s intention to consider the days of old suggests that he is seeking to recall the times when God showed His faithfulness to His people in the past. This includes instances like the exodus from Egypt, the parting of the Red Sea, the wilderness wanderings, and the conquest of the Promised Land. By meditating on these historical acts of God’s deliverance, the psalmist seeks to find strength and encouragement for his own distress.

Application:

  • Psalm 77:5 encourages us to reflect on the faithfulness of God in our lives and in history. When we face difficulties or challenging circumstances, we can draw strength by remembering how God has been faithful to His people throughout time. By considering the days of old, we can find reassurance that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). This practice of remembrance can deepen our faith, increase our trust in God, and provide us with hope in times of trouble.
