Mine eyes

shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me: he that walketh in a perfect way, he shall serve me. Psalms 101:6 (KJV)

Psalm 101 is attributed to King David and is classified as a wisdom psalm. It reflects David’s commitment to live righteously and to govern with justice. In verse 6 David declares, “Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me: he that walketh in a perfect way, he shall serve me.” This statement reveals three linked intentions. First, David intends to watch closely the people of the land, identifying those who are loyal to God and trustworthy in character. Second, he desires that these faithful individuals actually dwell with him, indicating a wish for companionship and community built on integrity. Third, he expects that anyone who walks in a perfect, blameless way will become his servant, underscoring that service to the king must be grounded in uprightness.

The context of the psalm shows David resolving to walk in integrity and to administer justice as a king. His focus on faithful companionship is both personal and governmental: he seeks reliable people for his household and for the administration of the nation. By emphasizing a “perfect way,” David links moral character directly to the suitability for service.

Application for believers today follows three clear lessons.

First, we are called to seek faithful companionship, surrounding ourselves with people whose lives reflect loyalty to God, thereby gaining support, accountability, and encouragement.

Second, personal integrity is paramount; our conduct should demonstrate our commitment to God’s ways, prompting us to prioritize spiritual growth and righteousness in daily life.

Third, the passage highlights the importance of character in leadership. Whether in family, workplace, or community, leaders must embody faithfulness, integrity, and justice, for such qualities enable them to positively influence and serve those under their care.
