Psalms 148:6

Posted on 18 May at 15:11

“He hath also stablished them for ever and ever: he hath made a decree which shall not pass.”

1. Understanding the Context: Psalm 148 is a song of praise and worship to God. It calls upon all of creation, both heavenly and earthly, to praise the Lord. In this particular verse, the psalmist is emphasizing God’s establishment of the created order and the enduring nature of His decrees.

2. God’s Establishment: The verse begins by stating, “He hath also stablished them for ever and ever.” Here, “them” refers to the heavenly bodies and the elements of creation mentioned in the preceding verses. The psalmist recognizes that God is the one who established and ordered the universe. It speaks of God’s sovereignty and creative power in setting the celestial bodies in their places, establishing their courses, and upholding their existence.

3. The Decree that Shall Not Pass: The verse continues, “he hath made a decree which shall not pass.” This phrase refers to God’s sovereign and unchangeable decree. It suggests that God has established certain laws and principles in the universe that are unalterable. God’s decrees are permanent and endure throughout all generations. They are reliable and trustworthy, not subject to human whims or passing fads.

4. Application to our Lives: Psalm 148:6 reminds us of God’s greatness, power, and sovereignty over all creation. It encourages us to recognize and appreciate the order and beauty in the world around us, knowing that it is God who established and sustains it. Moreover, it reminds us that God’s decrees are unchanging and trustworthy. We can find comfort and security in knowing that God’s Word and promises are eternal and will not pass away.

5. Further Reflection: As you meditate on Psalm 148:6, consider the following questions:

  • – How does contemplating the established order of the universe and God’s unchanging decrees impact your understanding of His sovereignty?
  • – In what ways can you express your praise and worship to God for His creation and His enduring Word?
  • – How does the assurance of God’s unchanging decrees give you hope and confidence in your faith journey?
