Proverbs 1:11

Posted on 18 May at 15:11
Listen to this article

“If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause.”

This verse is part of the opening chapter of the Book of Proverbs, which is attributed to King Solomon, known for his wisdom. In this particular verse, Solomon warns against the influence of wicked individuals who entice others into participating in evil acts.

The verse begins with the conditional statement, “If they say, Come with us.” This implies that the speaker is addressing someone who is being invited to join a group engaged in malicious activities. The invitation is characterized by the intention to “lay wait for blood” and “lurk privily for the innocent without cause.” Here, “lay wait for blood” refers to plotting violence or harm against others, while “lurk privily for the innocent without cause” implies a scheme to ambush or harm innocent individuals without any justifiable reason.

This verse conveys a message of caution and warns against becoming entangled with wicked people or being swayed by their persuasive tactics. It serves as a reminder of the importance of discernment, making wise choices, and resisting the temptation to participate in evil acts. Solomon emphasizes the potential consequences of such actions and the harm they can cause, both to others and to one’s own character and reputation.

From a broader perspective, this verse reflects a recurring theme in the Book of Proverbs: the stark contrast between wisdom and foolishness, righteousness and wickedness. It highlights the importance of choosing the path of wisdom and righteousness, even in the face of alluring temptations or pressure from others.

By studying and internalizing this verse, individuals are encouraged to be discerning, to resist the influence of evil, and to choose a path that aligns with God’s wisdom and righteousness. It serves as a reminder of the importance of moral integrity, making choices that are in line with God’s commandments, and being cautious about the company we keep.

Overall, Proverbs 1:11 reminds us to be wary of the enticements of wicked individuals and to strive for wisdom and righteousness in our thoughts, words, and actions.
