Proverbs 3:35
The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the promotion of fools.
Proverbs 3:35 (KJV)
Context
The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings and teachings attributed to King Solomon, known for his God-given wisdom. Proverbs offers practical guidance for living a wise and righteous life, addressing various aspects of human behaviour, relationships, and virtues. This verse concludes a section that contrasts the destinies of the wise and the foolish.
Meaning
The wise are those who fear the Lord, seek His understanding, and live in accordance with His commands. They are characterised by discernment, prudence, and righteousness. The verse states that the wise shall inherit glory. This refers to the blessings, honour, and favour that come from living a wise and righteous life. The wise are those who walk in obedience to God’s commands and seek to honour Him in all their ways. As a result, they are recipients of God’s blessings, both in this life and in the life to come. Their actions and attitudes reflect the character of God, and they are often respected and honoured by others.
In contrast to the wise, fools are promised shame as their promotion. This indicates that their actions and choices will ultimately lead to disgrace and dishonour. The Hebrew word for “promotion” (qalown) can mean dishonour or disgrace, and the verse uses irony: what fools think elevates them actually brings shame. Fools, who persist in unwise and wicked behaviour, often face the consequences of their actions. Their actions may bring about shame, disappointment, and even ruin. The promotion of fools refers to the outcome or result of their choices, which typically leads to negative consequences rather than blessings.
Biblical connections
The wise inherit glory as an inheritance—a gift from God—not something earned by human effort. This points to the gospel: those who are wise in Christ receive glory as heirs of God. The preceding verse, Proverbs 3:34, states that God gives grace to the humble, and this verse shows the wise as the humble who receive glory.
Application
Beyond the literal interpretation, this verse holds spiritual significance. It encourages us to pursue wisdom, seek God’s guidance, and align our lives with His principles. By doing so, we can experience the blessings and favour that come from living in harmony with God’s will. Conversely, when we reject wisdom, engage in foolish behaviour, and disregard God’s commands, we risk experiencing shame and negative consequences. The verse challenges readers to examine whether they are pursuing wisdom or folly, and to recognize that true wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord.
Reflection
Consider the path you are walking today. Are your choices leading toward the glory that God gives to the humble, or toward the shame that comes to those who exalt themselves? True wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord and leads to an inheritance of honour that only He can bestow.
