Proverbs 9:3

She hath sent forth her maidens; she cryeth vpon the highest places of the citie. Proverbs 9:3 (KJV)

Proverbs 9 presents a vivid contrast between the ways of Wisdom and the ways of Folly, each personified as a woman. Wisdom is depicted as a virtuous woman who builds a house, prepares a feast, and openly invites all who will come, while Folly is portrayed as a seductive woman who lures people with empty promises. Verse 3 zeroes in on Wisdom, describing her public proclamation.

The phrase “she hath sent forth her maidens” refers to Wisdom herself. The “maidens” symbolize messengers or servants dispatched to spread the invitation to the feast of wisdom. Their sending demonstrates the broad reach and universal availability of wisdom, indicating that the invitation is extended to everyone without restriction.

The clause “she crieth upon the highest places of the city” shows Wisdom actively calling out from the most prominent locations. This imagery conveys that wisdom is not hidden or reserved for a select few; it is publicly announced, urgent, and accessible to all who will hear. The loud, public cry underscores the importance of responding promptly to the invitation.

Application of this verse begins with the invitation to wisdom. Just as Wisdom sends out her maidens, God invites each person to seek His wisdom and understanding. Believers are called to pursue wisdom, to study the Word of God, to heed godly counsel, and to learn from personal experience, recognizing that wisdom is within reach.

The cry from the highest places also stresses the urgency of responding. Delay or procrastination can result in missed opportunities and negative consequences. Therefore, prioritizing the pursuit of wisdom and making wise choices should be a continual focus.

Finally, as Wisdom sends her maidens to invite others, believers are likewise encouraged to share the wisdom they have received. Wisdom is not meant to be hoarded; extending it to others helps them make prudent decisions and grow in their understanding of God’s ways.
