Proverbs 11:22

Listen to this article

“As a jewel of gold in a swine’s snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion.”

Context:Proverbs is a book in the Old Testament known for its practical wisdom, often attributed to King Solomon. It contains various maxims, advice, and moral teachings to guide people in making wise choices.

This verse is a vivid metaphorical statement found in the book of Proverbs, which is known for its wisdom literature. It presents a contrasting image to illustrate a valuable lesson about the importance of inner qualities over external appearances.

“As a jewel of gold in a swine’s snout”: This phrase compares a beautiful and valuable jewel made of gold with a repulsive and inappropriate location-the snout of a pig. Pigs were considered unclean animals in Jewish culture. The metaphor emphasizes the incongruity and waste of putting something valuable in an unsuitable place.

“So is a fair woman which is without discretion”: This phrase suggests that outward beauty is of little value when it is not accompanied by discretion or good judgment. The focus is on the lack of wisdom or discernment in a beautiful woman, indicating that her physical attractiveness loses significance when she lacks inner qualities.

The verse speaks to the importance of character and inner qualities over outward appearances. It warns against being captivated by external beauty alone, without considering the person’s wisdom, discernment, or moral character. Just as a gold jewel would lose its value when placed in a pig’s snout where it is out of place, a beautiful woman who lacks discretion or good judgment loses her appeal and significance.

  • Prioritise inner qualities:This verse reminds us to value character traits such as wisdom, discernment, and moral integrity over external appearances. It encourages us to seek and appreciate individuals who exhibit these inner qualities.
  • Look beyond appearances:It serves as a cautionary reminder to not be swayed solely by external beauty but to consider a person’s character, values, and actions. This applies to relationships, friendships, and even our own self-perception.
  • Cultivate discretion:The verse highlights the importance of developing good judgment and wisdom in our own lives. It reminds us to seek wisdom from God and to exercise discernment in our choices and interactions with others.
