Proverbs 13:3

Posted on 18 May at 15:10
Listen to this article

“He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.”

This verse focuses on the power and consequences of our words and the importance of exercising restraint in speech. Let’s explore some key themes and lessons we can learn from this verse:

The power of speech:The verse highlights the significant impact our words can have on our lives. It suggests that by controlling our speech, we can preserve our well-being. Our words have the potential to build up or tear down, to encourage or discourage, and to promote peace or cause conflict. Therefore, it is crucial to be mindful of what we say and how we say it.

Self-control:The verse emphasizes the need for self-control in speech. It encourages us to “keepeth” or guard our mouth, indicating the importance of monitoring and restraining our words. This requires discipline and intentionality. It is wise to think before we speak, considering the potential consequences of our words.

Life and destruction:The verse contrasts the outcomes of controlling one’s speech and being careless with words. It suggests that by keeping our mouth, we preserve our life. This can be understood in various ways. Controlling our speech can protect our relationships, maintain our reputation, and prevent unnecessary conflicts and misunderstandings. On the other hand, those who “openeth wide his lips” without restraint face the risk of destruction. This can refer to the negative consequences that can arise from thoughtless or hurtful words, such as damaged relationships or the loss of trust.

Wisdom and discernment:The verse implies that exercising wisdom and discernment in our speech is crucial. It is not merely about holding back words but also about speaking at the right time, with the right tone, and in the right manner. Proverbs 15:23 (KJV) reinforces this idea, stating that “a word spoken in due season, how good is it!” It is important to seek God’s guidance and allow His wisdom to govern our words.
