Proverbs 13:19

Posted on 18 May at 15:10
Listen to this article

“The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul: but it is abomination to fools to depart from evil.”

Desires and Accomplishment: The verse begins by highlighting the sweetness that comes from the accomplishment of a desire. This suggests that when we pursue and achieve our legitimate desires, it brings a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction to our souls. It recognizes the inherent human longing for fulfillment and the joy that accompanies the fulfillment of our desires.

Departing from Evil: The verse contrasts the positive experience of achieving desires with the response of fools who refuse to depart from evil. This implies that fools choose to remain in their wicked ways and refuse to turn away from evil. The word "abomination" indicates a strong detestation or disgust towards the idea of abandoning sinful behaviour.

Wise vs. Foolish: This verse underscores the distinction between the wise and the foolish. The wise are those who pursue righteous desires and experience the sweetness of their fulfilment, while fools reject the path of righteousness and cling to evil. It emphasises the importance of wisdom in discerning the right course of action and the negative consequences of foolishness.

Moral and Spiritual Application: Proverbs is a book of wisdom, and this verse imparts moral and spiritual lessons. It encourages readers to seek after noble desires that align with God’s will and experience the joy that comes from achieving them. Furthermore, it warns against the folly of persisting in sinful behaviour, which ultimately leads to ruin and displeases God.

  • In summary, Proverbs 13:19 reminds us of the satisfaction and sweetness that comes from accomplishing legitimate desires, while contrasting it with the folly of clinging to evil. It urges us to pursue wisdom, choose righteousness, and turn away from wickedness. Ultimately, the verse highlights the importance of aligning our desires with God’s will and seeking to live a life that pleases Him.
