Proverbs 15:2

Listen to this article

The tongue of the wise, vseth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fooles, powreth out foolishnes. Proverbs 15:2 (KJV)

Context: The book of Proverbs offers practical wisdom and guidance for living a righteous and wise life. Its short, pithy sayings address relationships, work, speech, and character, inviting readers to discern truth and apply it daily.

The Power of Words: Proverbs 15:2 highlights the significant impact of our speech. It draws a clear contrast between the tongue of the wise, who uses knowledge properly, and the mouth of fools, who pours out foolishness. The verse reminds us that words can build up or tear down, encourage or discourage, bring peace or stir strife.

The Tongue of the Wise: This phrase refers to the words spoken by those who possess wisdom and understanding. Wisdom is not merely possessing knowledge but applying it skillfully. The wise exercise discretion and discernment, choosing language that promotes understanding, edification, and righteousness.

The Mouth of Fools: In contrast, the mouth of fools represents speech lacking wisdom. Such persons speak without thinking, often hasty, hurtful, deceitful, or confused. Their words can cause harm, discord, and confusion within the community.

Applying the Wisdom: Proverbs 15:2 calls believers to be mindful of what they say. As followers of God, we are urged to use knowledge responsibly, allowing our words to build up rather than destroy. Cultivating wisdom, seeking understanding, and guarding our tongues become essential practices for a godly life.

Additional Scripture: This teaching resonates with Proverbs 18:21: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” The verse underscores the weight of our speech and its lasting impact on ourselves and others.

Remember, the ultimate goal of studying this passage is not merely to acquire knowledge but to apply it, allowing the wisdom of Proverbs to shape our character, relationships, and walk with the Lord.
