Proverbs 17:9

Listen to this article

“He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.”

Context:The book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom literature written primarily by King Solomon. It contains practical advice for righteous living, addressing various aspects of life such as relationships, speech, work, and morality. Proverbs 17:9 specifically deals with the themes of forgiveness, love, and the impact of our words on relationships.

“He that covereth a transgression seeketh love”:This verse speaks to the importance of forgiveness and love. It encourages us to be merciful and understanding toward others when they have wronged us. Instead of broadcasting their faults or seeking vengeance, the verse suggests that covering or overlooking their transgression can lead to the preservation and growth of love.

“But he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends”:This phrase warns against gossip, spreading rumors, or continually bringing up someone’s past mistakes or wrongdoings. By repeating a matter or holding onto grudges, we can damage friendships and cause divisions among people. It emphasizes the destructive power of gossip and the importance of guarding our words.

Application:Proverbs 17:9 offers several lessons for our daily lives:

  • Practice forgiveness:When someone wrongs us, our natural tendency may be to seek retribution or hold onto the offense. However, this verse encourages us to seek love and show mercy instead. By choosing forgiveness, we foster an atmosphere of love and reconciliation.
  • Exercise discretion in speech:We should be careful with our words, avoiding gossip, and refraining from unnecessarily repeating or dwelling on negative matters. Instead, we should strive to speak words of encouragement, edification, and reconciliation.
  • Preserve relationships:By covering transgressions and refraining from repeating matters, we can maintain and strengthen our friendships. It reminds us to prioritize unity and peace, rather than engaging in behavior that leads to division and estrangement.
  • Reflecting God’s character:As believers, we are called to imitate God’s character, and forgiveness is a central aspect of His nature. By demonstrating forgiveness and love, we reflect God’s attributes and become instruments of His grace in the lives of others.
  • Related Scriptures:Several other verses in the Bible echo the principles found in Proverbs 17:9. Here are a few examples:
  • Proverbs 10:12 (KJV):“Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.”
  • Matthew 6:14-15 (KJV):“For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”
  • Colossians 3:13 (KJV):“Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.”

By studying and applying these related Scriptures, we gain a broader understanding of the principles of forgiveness, love, and their impact on relationships.

Remember, Proverbs offers general principles for wise living, but the specific application may vary depending on the situation. It is always beneficial to seek further guidance from the Holy Spirit, consider the entire counsel of Scripture, and seek wise counsel from trusted believers when applying biblical wisdom to our lives.
