“A man’s belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled.”

Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Bible attributed to King Solomon. It contains practical instructions for living a righteous and successful life according to God’s principles. This verse is part of a collection of proverbs emphasizing the power and consequences of our words.

Understanding the verse:

  • “A man’s belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth”:This phrase indicates that the words a person speaks have consequences. Just as eating nourishes the body, the words we speak can either bring satisfaction or negative outcomes to our lives.
  • “And with the increase of his lips shall he be filled”:This suggests that the words we speak can have an impact on our overall well-being. When our speech is wise, uplifting, and filled with truth, it brings fulfillment and blessing.
  • Principles derived from the verse:
  • Power of our words:Our words have the ability to shape our lives and the lives of those around us. They can either bring satisfaction and fulfillment or lead to negative consequences.
  • Personal responsibility:The verse emphasizes that it is a person’s own mouth and lips that bring about the consequences. We are accountable for the words we speak and should choose them wisely.
  • Importance of wise speech:The verse highlights the value of using our words wisely. When we speak truth, encouragement, and kindness, it leads to positive outcomes and blessings in our lives.
  • Application:

    • Self-reflection:Take time to reflect on your own speech patterns. Are your words uplifting and beneficial, or do they tend to be negative or hurtful? Consider areas where you can improve your speech.
    • Guard your tongue:Be mindful of the words you speak, avoiding gossip, lies, and harsh speech. Instead, strive to use words that bring life, encouragement, and truth to others.
    • Seek wisdom:Cultivate wisdom by studying God’s Word and seeking His guidance. The more wisdom we acquire, the more our words will reflect godly principles and bring positive outcomes.
    • Related Bible passages:
    • Proverbs 15:4 (KJV):“A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.”
    • Matthew 12:36-37 (KJV):“But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.”

Remember, the overall message of this verse is to be mindful of the words we speak and to use them wisely, knowing that they have the power to bring blessing or harm.
