Listen to this article

“Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.”

Context: Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Old Testament. It contains practical advice and teachings on various aspects of life, including relationships, work, wealth, and character. Proverbs 23:12 is part of a collection of proverbs attributed to King Solomon, known for his wisdom.

The importance of instruction: The verse emphasises the value of applying one’s heart to instruction. Instruction refers to teachings, guidance, or correction given by a wise person or authority figure. It highlights the necessity of being receptive and open to learning from others who possess wisdom and knowledge.

Diligent listening: The second part of the verse emphasises the need to tune our ears to the words of knowledge. It encourages active and attentive listening, which involves not only hearing but also comprehending and internalising the wisdom imparted.

Humility and teachability: This verse reflects the importance of humility and a teachable spirit. It reminds us that we should not be too proud or arrogant to think that we know everything. Instead, we should acknowledge that there is always more to learn and be willing to receive instruction and wisdom from others.

Seeking wisdom: The verse encourages us to actively seek knowledge and understanding. It implies that wisdom is not attained passively but requires intentional effort and engagement. By applying our hearts to instruction and listening attentively, we position ourselves to acquire knowledge, grow in wisdom, and make informed decisions.

Application in daily life: Proverbs 23:12 has practical implications for our daily lives. It reminds us to seek out mentors, teachers, and wise counsellors who can guide us in various areas of life. It encourages us to read and study God’s Word, which is a rich source of wisdom and knowledge. Additionally, it challenges us to cultivate a humble and teachable spirit, always eager to learn and grow.
