Proverbs 26:14
As the door turneth upon his hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed.
Proverbs 26:14 (KJV)
Context
Proverbs is an Old Testament book filled with practical wisdom about daily life. This verse belongs to a series of sayings about the sluggard, a person who avoids work. The comparison to a door turning on its hinges would have been familiar to ancient readers, who saw doors swing back and forth without moving anywhere. The door is attached to a fixed point, and the sluggard is attached to his bed, unable to break free from his indolence.
Meaning
The slothful person turns on his bed just as a door turns on its hinges. The motion is repetitive and purposeless. He may toss and turn, but he never gets up to do anything useful. The door stays attached to its frame, and the sluggard stays attached to his bed. His activity brings no progress, only comfort and restlessness. The verse exposes the futility of laziness: activity without progress. The sluggard is not necessarily motionless; he may be busy with his own comfort, but his “work” is only self-indulgent restlessness.
Biblical connections
Proverbs often warns that laziness leads to poverty and ruin, as seen in Proverbs 6:6-11 and 24:30-34. The gospel calls believers to be diligent in good works, not for salvation, but as evidence of a changed heart (Ephesians 2:10). Christ Himself worked tirelessly in His earthly ministry, serving as the perfect example of faithful labor. We are to imitate Him, not the sluggard.
Application
This verse challenges us to examine our own lives. Are we turning without advancing? We may think we are busy, but if our activity is only self-focused, it is worthless in God’s eyes. The remedy for sloth is not mere willpower, but a heart changed by the gospel, which produces love for God and neighbor. We must beware of making comfort our god, for the bed that promises rest can become a prison.
Reflection
True rest is found in Christ, but that rest should lead to labor for His kingdom, not to laziness. Let us pray for the Spirit’s power to overcome idleness and to use our time for His glory. By embracing diligence, we avoid the pitfalls of slothfulness and experience the rewards of disciplined effort. Let us ask the Spirit to change our hearts so that we desire to serve God and others, not just ourselves.
