Proverbs 27:6

Listen to this article

“Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.”

Context:The book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom literature attributed primarily to King Solomon. It contains practical advice and insights for living a wise and godly life. Proverbs 27:6 is a proverbial statement that emphasises the value of genuine friendship and the importance of honesty.

Faithful wounds of a friend:This phrase suggests that true friends are willing to speak the truth even when it hurts. A genuine friend is someone who cares deeply about your well-being and is willing to confront you with necessary correction or rebuke. Their wounds, though they may be painful, come from a place of love, seeking to help you grow and improve.

Deceitful kisses of an enemy:In contrast to the faithful wounds of a friend, the kisses of an enemy are described as deceitful. This phrase conveys the idea that flattery and false praise from an enemy or someone with malicious intentions are not genuine or trustworthy. They may have ulterior motives and can lead to harm or betrayal.

Application:Proverbs 27:6 teaches us several important principles:

  • True friendship requires honesty:A genuine friend is not afraid to speak the truth, even when it may be difficult or uncomfortable. Such friendships foster personal growth, accountability, and trust.
  • Beware of deceptive flattery:This verse reminds us to be discerning and cautious of those who offer excessive praise or flattery. Not all expressions of kindness are sincere, and some may be intended to manipulate or deceive.
  • Value honest criticism:Receiving constructive criticism from a true friend should be embraced rather than rejected. It is an opportunity for personal growth and self-improvement.
  • Choose your friends wisely:Proverbs 27:6 encourages us to cultivate friendships with people who have our best interests at heart. Surrounding ourselves with trustworthy and faithful friends enhances our lives and helps us become better individuals.
  • Connection to other biblical teachings:The principle of faithful wounds from a friend aligns with the biblical concept of accountability and the importance of speaking the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). It also reflects the wisdom found in Proverbs 27:17, which states, “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend,” emphasising the mutual benefit of true friendship.

In summary, Proverbs 27:6 reminds us of the value of true friendship and the significance of honesty within those relationships. It encourages us to embrace the faithful wounds of a friend while being cautious of the deceitful flattery of an enemy. By cultivating genuine friendships and embracing honest feedback, we can grow in wisdom and become better individuals.
