“The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks.”

Proverbs 30:26 (KJV):The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks;

Proverbs 30:26 is part of a collection of wise sayings attributed to King Solomon, known as the Book of Proverbs. This verse uses the example of the conies, also known as rock badgers or hyraxes, to convey a lesson about wisdom and strength.

Symbolism of the Conies:The verse begins by describing the conies as a "feeble folk." Conies are small, defenceless creatures that lack physical strength. However, despite their vulnerability, they display wisdom in finding refuge and building their homes in the rocks. This imagery is used to draw a parallel between the conies and human beings.

Wisdom in Fragility:The conies’ choice to dwell in the rocks highlights their resourcefulness and ability to adapt to their environment. They recognise their limitations and seek protection in a place that offers safety and security. Similarly, the verse implies that humans should exercise wisdom by recognising their own weaknesses and seeking refuge in God.

Lessons for Human Behaviour:The metaphor of the conies making their houses in the rocks can be applied to human life in several ways. It encourages individuals to seek wisdom and security in God, acknowledging their own limitations. It emphasises the importance of relying on a solid foundation, such as faith and trust in God, in order to overcome challenges and find strength in difficult times.

Humility and Dependency:The conies’ choice to build their houses in the rocks reveals a sense of humility and dependency. They recognise their need for protection and actively seek it out. In a similar manner, humans are encouraged to cultivate humility, recognising their dependence on God’s guidance and protection rather than relying solely on their own strength.

Overall, Proverbs 30:26 teaches us the value of wisdom, humility, and seeking refuge in God. It reminds us that even the seemingly feeble can find strength and security by placing their trust in the Lord.
