Ecclesiastes 3:17

I said in mine heart, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked: for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work.

Ecclesiastes 3:17 (KJV)

Ecclesiastes is attributed to King Solomon, known for his wisdom. The book examines life’s meaning and the vanity of human efforts. In this verse, the Teacher reflects on divine judgment and the order God has established.

The Teacher says in his heart that God shall judge the righteous and the wicked. This is a settled conviction, not a passing thought. He is certain that God is the ultimate judge who will assess the actions of both groups. This aligns with biblical teaching that God is just and will hold every person accountable for their choices.

The Teacher also observes that there is a specific time for every purpose and every work. This echoes the broader theme of Ecclesiastes 3, where God has appointed seasons for all activities. Here, it applies to judgment: God has a fixed time for every deed, implying that nothing escapes His notice.

This verse follows the observation of injustice in Ecclesiastes 3:16, where wickedness is found in places of judgment. In response, the Teacher declares that God will set all wrongs right in His appointed time. The judgment is comprehensive, covering both the righteous and the wicked, and it is universal, applying to every matter and deed.

This truth provides comfort and relief under the perversion of justice. It enables believers to leave things to Him who judges righteously and to wait for His timing. Though the wicked may seem to prosper while the righteous suffer, ultimately God will bring justice and vindicate those who are faithful to Him.

Ecclesiastes 3:17 reminds us to live in alignment with God’s principles, to seek righteousness, and to trust that God’s justice will prevail even when it is not evident in our present circumstances. It also calls us to conduct ourselves with integrity, knowing we will be held accountable for our actions.

The certainty of divine judgment should lead us to fear God and keep His commandments. God’s judgment is not arbitrary but occurs at the appointed time, bringing accountability for all human actions. This encourages us to live with wisdom, trust in God’s timing, and conduct our lives in a manner that reflects His righteousness.
