Ecclesiastes 4:1

So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done vnder the sunne; & behold the teares of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter: and on the side of their oppressours there was power, but they had no comforter. Ecclesiastes 4:1 (KJV)

The book of Ecclesiastes, traditionally attributed to King Solomon (though some scholars note uncertainty), is a reflection on the meaning of life and the pursuit of happiness. It explores the vanity and futility of various pursuits and offers wisdom for living a meaningful life amid life’s uncertainties and challenges.

Observation: The author, identified as the Preacher or Teacher, considers the oppressions in the world. He notices the tears of the oppressed who have no comforter, and he notes that the powerful have power on their side, highlighting an imbalance.

Interpretation: The Preacher acknowledges the reality of oppression and the suffering of those who are oppressed. The tears of the oppressed reveal their pain, anguish, and despair. The absence of a comforter emphasizes the loneliness and helplessness of the oppressed. The presence of power on the side of the oppressors highlights the inequality and injustice that often accompanies oppression.

Application: This verse reminds us to be aware of the injustices and oppressions that occur in the world, prompting us to have compassion for those who are suffering and to work toward justice and equality. The tears of the oppressed signify their need for comfort and solace; as followers of Christ we are called to be compassionate and provide support and encouragement to those enduring difficult times. The verse implies an inherent power imbalance between oppressors and the oppressed, urging believers to seek to address systemic issues that perpetuate oppression and to work toward a more just society. While the verse describes the absence of human comforters, Christians can find solace and comfort in God, the ultimate comforter who offers healing, hope, and restoration to the brokenhearted.
