Ecclesiastes 11:5

As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child: even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all.

Ecclesiastes 11:5 (KJV)

Ecclesiastes, traditionally linked to King Solomon, reflects on the fleeting nature of worldly pursuits and urges readers to find meaning in God. Chapter 11 encourages bold action and generosity despite life’s uncertainties. The verse points to two everyday mysteries: the invisible path of the wind and the hidden growth of a child in the womb. Both illustrate that human knowledge is limited. The surrounding passage urges readers to act generously and diligently even when outcomes are unknown, because God remains in control.

In Hebrew, the word for spirit also means wind or breath. The “way of the spirit” suggests the unseen movement of air, which cannot be traced. Likewise, “how the bones do grow in the womb” describes the mysterious process of fetal development, known only to God. These examples show that God’s works are beyond full human understanding. Even with scientific progress, we cannot grasp every detail of life or nature. The verse calls for humility, reminding us that we depend on God’s wisdom and providence. It emphasizes God’s sovereignty and transcendence: He is the Maker of all things, and His activities are beyond human comprehension.

This teaching aligns with the broader biblical theme of God’s incomprehensibility, as seen in Isaiah 55:8-9, where God’s thoughts and ways are higher than ours. The verse also affirms the sanctity of life, since the formation of a child in the womb is described as a work of God. This truth invites trust in God’s providence even when circumstances are puzzling.

Because we cannot know all outcomes, we are called to act faithfully and generously, leaving results to God. We can sow seeds of kindness and service without knowing how they will grow. This posture of trust frees us from anxiety and leads us to rely on God’s control. Live faithfully, serve others, and leave the results to Him who makes all things and will bring about His purposes.

God is the Creator and Sustainer of all things. When we do not understand His ways, we can still trust His goodness and sovereignty. This verse invites us to surrender our need for complete understanding and rest in His wisdom.
